141 Willemsbrug, Rotterdam. Named after King William III of the Netherlands, this cable-stayed red bridge stands parallel to the Erasmusbrug (see page 126) and has a total span of 318 meters, joining the north and south of the port city of Rotterdam. From 2003 to 2008 an artificial beach was created on the right bank between the two bridges. Although intended as a leisure facility for Rotterdam residents, swimming was not permitted and digging sand pits - a crucial part of all Dutch children’s beach activities - was limited to the 50cm depth of the sand coverage.
