241 Trees in black relief, radio: a figure listens, small splintered lines—aftermath of the news. Night, buildings, utility poles, wires: a newspaper vendor an- nounces the headlines—end of the transformation. Eastern buildings: a speaker harangues a crowd gathered—po- litical lies. Night and mountain, Great Wall of China: soldiers march in step—a sign of war. Night, moon, sea, airplanes, warships in silhouette, cut outs, shadows on waves, black fumes—another sign of war. Night and railway: a military convoy passes, lines of speed scroll, plume of smoke—another sign of war. Dawn, clouds, gloomy plain, curtain, wooden telegraph poles, shiny tracks and bent crossties: soldiers keep watch while workers are active all around—sign of victory as much as de- feat. Conference hall, podium, carafe of water and glass: a speaker addresses the present diplomats—political lies. Car, windows, reflected strokes: in the backseat, the figure dressed in Chinese garb is imprisoned, drops of sweat splash, as the other in a hat sits beside him—questionable morality.
