HLF_Review_2013

8 An Ambitious Goal Welcome “The Heidelberg Laureate Forum - HLF - is about building relationships between established sci- entists and young researchers. It is about catch- ing advice, finding role models, mentors, may- be friends. In a nutshell: about networking. The HLF is not planned to be just another conglom- erate of in-depth lectures. Nor is it intended to be a sequence of overview presentations. There are plenty of such conferences. The idea of the HLF is to create something different, something new. The goal of the HLF is to awaken some interest and a rough understanding of mathematics and computer science, at least to create a more posi- tive attitude towards these fields in the good willing laymen, the general public. In the process of establishing the HLF as an extra- ordinary scientific event and making it known in the communities of mathematicians and com- puter scientists, the prize-giving institutions have been of invaluable help: The Alan Turing Award is given annually to one to three persons for outstanding merits in com- puter science by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The International Mathema- tical Union (IMU) honors twice every four years one to four out- standing mathematicians with the Fields Medal and also the Nevanlinna Prize for important contributions to the theoretical foundation of informatics. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters donates every year the Abel Prize in Memory of Nils Hendrik Abel for eminent achievements in mathematics.“ Dr. h. c. Dr.-Ing. E. h. Klaus Tschira in his opening speech on Sunday, Sep. 22, 2013 Founder of the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation “I believe that communication is a key factor in the process of achieving scientific success and excellence; the HLF strongly supports the inter- action, exchange and communication amongst researchers throughout all stages of their careers.“
