HLF_Review_2013

46 Participants Emre Can Sertöz, Undergraduate from Turkey. The Young Researchers The worldwide call for applications started in No- vember 2012. A few weeks later, the Scientific Committee of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum selected the 200 most talented candidates out of 600 submitted applications. At the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, they were given the opportunity to personally meet their scientific role models and spend nearly a week discussing research and getting advice for their career as a researcher. Moreover, they met 200 fellow scientists from all over the world and dis- cussed the latest research in their fields. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity helps researchers at an early stage in their careers. Building Networks Being connected to fel- low scientists is crucial for the future career of a young researcher. With many research issues becoming more and more complex, building net- works has become essential for scientists from all disciplines. Exchanging ideas and thus learn- ing new perspectives and angles about ongoing or future research projects is a vital element of successful science. While everyday research workdays usually leave little time for personal exchange, the HLF offers a colorful setting for scientific dialogues. Bushra Anjum, a junior professor in computer science, who works in Pakistan: “Having peo- ple from 49 countries in just one sin- gle building is an uncommon setting that you do not come across that very often - so people were trying to get to know each other, building their network. I think the Forum served this pur- pose really well.” This scientific dialogue across generations which facilitates networking for the researchers may evenhelpestablishconnectionsforfutureprojects. “I have learned more than I learned in years.“ Emre Can Sertöz
