29 Welcome | About the Forum | The Participants | Communications | HLF Diary | Résumé HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, is the research institute of the Klaus Tschira Stiftung. It has become operational in January 2010. Today, around 100 scientists from 15 countries work in 10 research groups. They conduct basic research in areas where large amounts of data are produced and analyzed from astrophysics to cell biology. The scientists are participating in international project consortia, such as the “Human Brain Project” in the life sci- ences, or the “Virgo Consortium” in astrophysics. One of the institute’s goals is to make both the scientific community and the public more aware of the importance of computer-based, data- driven science, especially in the natural sciences. Therefore, HITS has launched the “Journalist in Residence” program, a grant for experienced journalists with a focus on science. It gives them the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in all aspects of data-driven science. The institute is jointly managed by Klaus Tschira and the computer scientist Andreas Reuter, who both have initiated the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. Interdisciplinary work is important for the scientists from 15 nations who work at the HITS.
