The first thing we noticed is that there are less exhibitors than the last time we were at the event. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because if anything there were probably more customers this year than the last time we attended too. I’ve been to the Blue Crab festival several times over the last 25 years too... and the story is always the same. If you come to Palatka to participate in a show expect sales, but not big sales. This is not a high income area and it’s smack dab in the middle of rural northern Florida. You don’t see a lot of Mercedes and Porsche’s parked along the highway. Youdoontheotherhandseequitea few four wheel drive trucks sitting about five feet in the air. If you’ve priced one of those lately you’ll agree with me that obviously there is some money in the area... they just aren’t spending it on $4000.00 paintings for their condos. Ispoketoalotofexhibitorsandtheprice point where most things sold was probably in the $20.00 range. Things that sold the best were definitely craft oriented and mostly were practical thing sort of things. Soaps did very well, inexpensive jewelry, home made dog biscuits, candles, gourmet soups and dips... we saw some people selling lawn chairs, toys for kids, wood crafts, t-shirts. There was some pottery and a person doing leather goods too, but nothing that was too expensive. I’m sure that gives you an idea of the market here. Food always seems to do well at the Azalea Festival. I saw everything from BBQ, to donuts, to burgers, to ice cream and just about everything fried or grilled that you can imagine. There were a couple of smoothie people doing alright too. The people attending may not have dropped a tone of money buying expensive art... but it sure looked like they were spending some money eating! Interestingly, the one thing I didn’t see were azaleas! There are some other really good things about doing a show here in Palatka. There is plenty of parking for both the exhibitors and the shoppers and most of it is free! That’s a real plus. In my mind there is nothing worse than going to a show expecting to make a few dollars but not get rich... but then you’re hit with some $45.00 per day parking fee! Here the parking for exhibitors is close by and that also makes it easy to restock as the weekend progresses on. Places to spend the night aren’t bad either. Although you don’t have100hotelstochoosefrom,thosethatare here are pleasant do deal with and you won’t feel completely gouged when you leave on Sunday night. And although Palatka doesn’t have its own “Rodeo Drive,” the town is centrally located and it’s easy to get to for all the people that live in the county. So there you have it... and nice show that isn’t too expensive, you can expect to sell a lot of lower priced items, the load in and tear down are easy, the people who run the show are pleasant and chances are very goodyou’llbedrivinghomeonSundaynight better off than you were when you left home on Friday to set up!
