At a show and want to remind customers to come and see you? No problem... Facebook can do that for you! Post a picture of your display... a customer modeling that new piece they just bought... a picture of the crowd... a new product or piece of work you just completed... whatever it takes to stimulate action on the part of the potential buyer! Along those same lines you could also send out an email that takes the form of an impromptu newsletter with a little “on the spot” reporting! This and the Facebook or Twitter approach is a good idea not only for the exhibitors... but for show sponsors too! It wouldbeajobsendingtheseemailsoutoneat a time... or for that matter ten at a time. But you can use a service like Mail Chimp that allowsyoutosendseveralhundredemailsout at one shot and the service is free for I think up to 2500 emails. They provide templates too so making something nice is easy and can once again be done from any kind of tablet. I suppose it would be possible to use a cell phone but you’d need tiny fingers and a lot of patience! Mobile credit card processing has also never been easier. There are always the tried and true mobile units that are dedicated card processors... but there are now plenty of options for you to use devices that just plug in to your smart phone that do the trick too. I know that First National Processing whose ad you’ll see on our back cover offers a lot of very competitive options for this kind of thing. Sureyoucangetoneofthose“Square” type of modules from a lot of sources now, but customer service is also worth something when there is a problem with either the device or a transaction and not all credit card companies are created equal! Keeping your stock of merchandise up while you’re traveling isn’t always easy either. Andforsometypesofworktheamount of equipment necessary to produce the art or craftisjusttooextensivetomovearound. But ways to produce work are getting more and more portable. While you wouldn’t want to bring a kiln along to produce pottery beside the highway... little portable kilns might be just the trick for jewelry. Need to print more photographs, prints of paintings or other graphics? There is a Sam’s Club in just about every town and your DVD, memory card or other media works there just like it does at home. If what you’re doing is a bit more involved, check with local art leagues and coops. Many times they will have a facility your could rent temporarily. Who knows... if you have a skill their members are interested in then maybe you could even trade some demonstrations or a class or two for space to create some of your work. Another idea is to actually rent a space for a short time to set up shop in a place central to where you’ll be doing shows for a few weeks. Basing yourself in a place like central Virginia or Central New York gives you a wide range of reach. For those of you living in Florida... you might try talking to a few people from the north who do shows in the south in the winter. You could accommodate them in the winter months and they could do the same for you in the summer. Both of you benefit and instead of only going to somewhere far away to sell for two or three weeks, you couldextendyourstayorseveralmoreweeks because you won’t be running out of stock! Here is a great place to get creative. Staying on the road and keeping mobile is always more of a challenge than just working the 50 mile radius around your homestompinggrounds...buttherehasnever been a better time to do it! Technology, creativity and the will to keep cash flowing into your accounts has bonded together so that the possibilities have really expanded. How... and whether you take advantage of them is up to you... but staying in business andremainingprofitablewhileyoutravelhas never been easier!
