If you book shows in Florida in March then make sure you’re prepared to protect yourself and your work from the elements. The weekend at the Grant Seafood Festival was true to form this year and we were threatened with bad weather the whole time. Over the last few years it seems that the festival had kind of lost focus with regard to the direction they wanted to go with exhibitors. The good news is that this year that focus seems to have returned and as a result we had some strong exhibitors and although there were a several empty booths, theeventhadanicemixofworkandweended up having a really good show. Saturday we were lucky and although we were surrounded by rain on all sides it didn’t hit us. Actually we had a great show on Saturday with lots of sales and a lot of people. Sunday morning our luck ran out and we did get hit with a few of the storms. By about 10:00am everything cleared up and the people came back. Although we thought Sunday sales may be down... and compared to Saturday they were... but we still had a decent day. By about 3:30-4:00pm the show was over for all intents and purposes but when we counted up the sales we had a reallydecentweekendandwe’ddefinitelybe back again next year. I don’t care how well you plan a festival... when then weather is threatening you always run the risk of iffy sales. Luckilytheshopperstooktheirchances with the weather too and didn’t leave their wallets at home! Historically this show has always been a good one for us. For a short time there was confusion about direction but I also believe that is in the past now... so the potential for this show is really strong. Monica did a great job of organizing the event, advertising very well and picking the exhibitors. This year there were several new people and the reality is that actually worked in our favor. We are alwayscomingupwithsomethingnewforour booth but not everyone does that. With the new exhibitors the customers seemed to like the variety and spending was back to 100%. Carnival on the Mile March 7 & 8, 2015 Miracle Mile Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Coral Gables, FL This show is usually packed for both days and we’ve done the show for several years so I’m sure of that! This year on Saturday the Clinton’s were in town doing their political thing and as a result everything was blocked off, parking was very restricted and basically they turned a dynamite show into a really tough event for that day. In addition to the Clintons, there was also a music festival going on across US 1 and then downtown there was a gay pride event going on too. So not only was it hard to get to the show... there was a lot of competition too. On a positive note, the weather was forecast to have 80% rain and it never came. At least we didn’t get wet along with a slow show! Sunday everything was back to normal. The crowds were there, the streets were open the weather was nice and the people were ready to buy! With only one viable day for the event we didn’t set any new sales records, but it did make the show worthwhile and we did make some money. There are a fair number of exhibitors at the show and a Hispanic theme runs throughoutthewholeshowsoifyoucanspeak some Spanish it’s a real asset. In fact, there are a lot of tourists here from SouthAmerica so you’ll see people from all over the place. The show is divided into three sections... one sectionisfineartandthishadsomereallynice work...anothersectionwasdedicatedtocrafts and it was the normal stuff you expect to see at a craft show and then another section had a fair amount of commercial, buy/sell sort of things too. This is a festival, not strictly an art or a craft show so naturally you’ll expect to see a wide variety and you do!
