A good number of you will be participating in shows all summer long. And withsummeralwayscomesthethreatofrain. Those of you who have survived a summer season before know the drill... but the new peopleoutthereneedtomakesuretoprepare. Of course the more southerly you choose to participate in shows during the summer season, the more likely rain will be a part of your daily routine. Rain and inclement weather has me thinking particularly about those of you who are just getting started in the business. When you put together your preparations for a show, always bring plenty of plastic with you or better yet tarps. It’s always easy to overlook the value of our blue friends on a nice clear sunny day, but when things turn wet you’ll be glad to have these with you. Along with the tarps or plastic, make sure you have several of the alligator style spring clamps for fastening the tarps or plastic to your tables, your display , the ground, yourcarorwhereeverelseyoumight want to fasten. Ropes are good to have too as along with the rain usually comes the wind. You don’t need something that will secure a battleship in port... but a good strong and flexible 1/4” to 3/8” nylon or polypropylene rope will do just fine. Personally I like the nylonbecauseitdoesn’tcomeuntiedaseasily. The polypropylene will do but you’ve got to make several knots in case the first couple come undone. Plastic bins are great to have too! While were talking about waterproofing... think about your packing too if you have fragile work. Paper, cardboard and the like are great when things are dry... but they are useless on a wet afternoon while you’re packing up. Somethinglikebubblewraporcarpetpadding will function quite well whether it’s wet or dry. You can re-use it over and over if you take care and don’t get carried away popping the little bubbles! Keep yourself dry too. It’s always worthwhile bringing a raincoat and boots or atleastsomethingyoudon’tmindgettingwet. Achange of clothing is nice too because after you’vewagedwaragainstarainstorm, packed everything up while you were getting soaked the last thing you want to do is look forward to a four hour drive feeling cold and wet! Once you do get home and after the weather has decided to turn pleasant again... don’t forget to take everything out and let it dry. If you don’t, the next week you’ll have mold and mildew all over everything. Black streaks on your canopy and the smell of mold doesn’t do anything to attract customers! Those of us who live in the south where it’s primarily flat tend to forget about one other property of water that those who live in more rolling or mountainous terrain are all to familiar with... and that is the fact that water AzaleaAzalea Festival -estival - Valdosta, Georgiaaldosta, Georgia Eastern Edition “Where The Shows Are !!!” Spring 2015 to Winter 201617
