. 30 Habaneros- Habaneros is a mobile Mexican street-food vendor that has been bringing its customers some of the best and hottest burritos in Birmingham since March 2013. Founded by owners Carl and Ben, and having made its way through the ranks at farmers’ markets, food shows and street-food events around the Midlands, Habaneros is dedicated to combining fresh and ethically-sourced ingredients together with their home-made sauces to create authentic and irresistibly tasty burritos that will convert you to the street food way of life. Catch these guys Monday – Friday 7:30am – 3:30pm on the corner of Temple Row by Pigeon Park. A quirky recently renovated old theatre pub dedicated to bringing the soul back to Birmingham – Soul food that is. The Victoria is first and foremost a pub – and a firm favorite to a core following of quirky regulars, local musicians and cocktail enthusiasts, with bar staff mixing up an eclectic array of cocktails (including old classics and intriguing innovations of their own). As part of Birmingham’s Soul Food Project – a movement devoted to showcasing the wonderful tastes, smells and sounds of America’s Deep South – The Victoria offers a delicious range of Louisiana’s finest comfort food Serving up baskets of catfish goujons, colossal burgers, meat and fish jambalayas (a traditional Louisiana paella) and hearty gumbos (a melting pot of meats, peppers and spices); one taste of this menu will leave you talking with a Mississippi twang and craving Soul Food in your sleep. Located in The Custard Factory, in the heart of Digbeth is Left For Dead. The record store opened in November 2013 by music enthusiast and record store veteran; Andrew. Left For Dead is a record store that hopes to bring back the social aspect of being a music fan and once again restore the forgotten magic of a friendship formed over the mutual love of music. Left For Dead stocks an eclectic range of new release Vinyl’s and CD’s across a whole field of genres, as well as quality back catalogues and books – offering customers the opportunity to discover new music and to re-discover old tastes. From old school hip-hop to heavy metal, blues to folk, the unique array of records Left For Dead offers won’t be found in your everyday generic high-street record shops. As if supplying you with endless quirky alternative options wasn’t enough Independent Birmingham want to reward you for supporting local Independent’s, this month the team will be launching an Independent Birmingham Membership Card. So far 25 Independents across Birmingham are a part of the movement including the 5 I’ve mentioned above. So what’s your reward? Each Independent will be offering a unique (obviously) offer to card members. We are all to often being bombarded by big companies showing little interest in the local details, the only personal touch I receive on the high street is my name loosely scribbled on a coffee cup. But recently I noticed a movement providing a platform for Birmingham’s unique scene of Independents offering up fresh alternatives to the stale high street. ‘Independent Birmingham’ – a clear-cut name for a clear-cut objective. The team is aiming to spread the word about thriving Independents and encourage people to rediscover their city in a new light. Through Social media and Website blog posts Independent Birmingham are shining the spotlight on Birmingham’s Independent ventures; from heavy-metal record shops to experimental cocktail bars, so if you’re sick of being a sheep… A contemporary cantina offering fresh South American tapas and street food dishes ranging in origin from Argentina to Mexico. Huge home-made nachos covered with salsa, sour cream, guacamole and your choice of meat; burritos and quesadillas with a variety of fillings; red wine glazed chorizo; fresh fish of the day marinated in citrus juices and scotch bonnet chilies; tacos stuffed with grilled red snapper, Mahi Mahi (a local South American fish) and King Prawns topped with cheese and chilli-lime salsa – the list goes on, with such an extensive range of food it allows repeat offenders to keep their dining experience fresh and new.
