. 24 f r i d a y . n e x t d o o r A night of triumph for some, tragedy for others and perhaps the greatest selfie ever taken. The Oscars have always been the highlight of the awards season and this year has been no exception. While the fight for best film, best actress and best director is always keenly followed; every actor must breathe a sigh of relief when Daniel Day Lewis isn’t up for any nominations. I had a genuine fear for the stability of the internet coming up to the announcement of best actor, if Leonardo DiCaprio lost that much deserved award, the world wide web may buckle and break under the countless memes thrust upon facebook. What if he won? Would world peace become instantaneous following the huge eruption of joy? Unfortunately for DiCaprio and his army of fans, we won’t find out (until his next nomination). The Wolf of Wall Street star let another Oscar slip through his fingers and didn’t we all know it come Monday morning. Matthew McConaughey received the award for his exceptional role in Dallas Buyers Club, and it has to be said that he deserved it. If someone told me a year ago, I would say Matthew McConaughey deserved an Oscar over DiCaprio? Films like The Aviator, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Inception would be thrown against McConaughey’s back catalogue, where he plays annoying characters in forgettable films. However, in the past year he seems to have remade himself into something credible, and with The Oscar winner playing the lead role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar out later this year, we can expect more great things from the comeback kid. Looking over my facebook in the last three months, my friends being of the 20 – 30 year old demographic, I saw such an overwhelming support for Scorsese’s brilliant and insane Wolf of Wall Street. In fact I haven’t seen such a vocal support for a film in many years, perhaps on such a level as Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings. It seems if its wands, wizards or Wall Street greed, the past few years have been your time to get to the cinema. Yet no awards went to the Wolf, it’s been a tough year having to compete with such topics as AIDS, slavery and frozen cartoon princesses. Let’s hope next year is as interesting as this one, and for the love of God give Leo that long overdue Oscar. You have an incredibly lively and unique way of performing, covering a huge variety of genres and styles. Why do you chose to play this way? There’s too many musical styles out there for me to pick just one style to play. Music to me, is like food, I absolutely love Sushi, but then, I love McDonnalds sometimes too….you know?   Sampling is a unique craft in its own right, why did it appeal to you more than the idea of producing? I would say that sampling is really just a part of producing. There are many aspects to producing a record. But sampling, taking something that’s already been, and flipping it in your own creative way, is something I always liked to do. I think it comes from my Hip-Hop DJ background, probably.   Having toured all around the country, where are some of your favourite venues to play? Any venue that has me! I still feel incredibly lucky DJ for a living and any gig I give it 100%. But I do love Japan, after the UK, as a country to DJ in.    What are your reasons for wearing a masked outfit when you perform? (is it because you are a superhero).  Yes.   It seems you were destined to DJ as DJ’ing and radio runs in the family. What other career path would you take if couldn’t spend your time at the turn-tables? A comic book artist, maybe. I always wanted to do some special effects for movies and make computer games. Fishmonger?   Your playing at MADE Birmingham in May, are you looking forward to the show?  Super excited. There’s so many exciting new tunes I want to play and I’m totally ready for it! Bring it on!   Who are some of your favourite up and coming acts at the moment? Artists that our readers may not of heard of before…  There’s too many to mention. I love Decible’s stuff. He makes Techno and Trap. He’s dope. Jaguar Skills – 90’s Hip-Hop Revisited (Nervous Records) – 08.04.14 Catch Jaguar Skills at MADE Sat 3rd May. Tickets available at: www.m-a-d-e.com/tickets the oscars Radio 1 legend Jaguar Skills defies categorisation. A music junkie, he refuses to pigeonhole himself into one genre of music. As a result, his energy behind the decks is unmatched, playing a hugely diverse selection of records. His mini- mixes caught the attention of the world and he has since enjoyed international bookings. The masked man himself will be joining us at the Textile Factory for the MADE Birmingham weekender, we caught up with his ahead of the event to talk sampling and superheroes… words by:Lee Smith
