6 Foster City living!LOCAL™ City Guide FOSTER CITY: A BRIEFHISTORY Foster City had its beginning as reclaimed marshlands devoted to dairyfarmingandevaporationponds. At the turn of the 20th century, the approximately 2,600 acres of tidal marshes now occupied by Foster City were owned by Frank Brewer, and the land was called Brewer Island. Brewer eventually sold his land to the Leslie Salt Company and Schilling Estate Company. This 1963 brochure showcased Foster City’s features and was made available to prospective residents for the sales offices located within the earliest housing developments. At the time only a few model homes existed, so Foster City’s marketing and promotional materials were limited to artist renditions of what was to come. (Image courtesy of the Duerr Family.)
