The Seer's Wolf2 ‘Me pet possum’s missing,’ said Lowan Tallow, ‘gone from her cage she has. When I took the Granny Smiths out for her breakfast the cage was still there—the door was shut and bolted—but the possum, gone.’ Mr Tallow, sitting in the kitchen of the Fairnies’ farmhouse, looked quite shaken. Pale even. His arms were so tightly folded they suggested the beginnings of a reef knot. And though he sat well back on his chair it seemed to Clover he might come loose, topple over, and land on the lino. ‘I’ve had that possum for two years,’ Lowan continued. ‘Just disappeared from her cage, she did. Me magpie and the five rabbits are there, but me possum’s gone.’Lowan’s head dropped. Then, straightening up he said, ‘I wonder if I could look over your sandhill block, Tim? Haven’t seen a possum there by any chance have you?’ ‘When did you say the possum went missing, Lowan?’ Tim Fairnie said playfully, stroking his chin. ‘Some time in the last forty-eight hours,’ Lowan replied. Clover looked from Lowan to her father and back again. Mr Tallow had scarcely touched his cup—was it that he didn’t like the tea? It was rather bitter. Perhaps her idea of leaving the teapot on the stovetop to brew had been a bad one. To cover the silence—but also to meet her obligations—she leaned forward to ask, ‘How is your tea, Mr Tallow?’ ‘Thanks, err, but it’s a little err...’ ‘I’ll make a fresh pot,’ she said. Tim nodded. ‘Yes, me possum’s gone,’ Lowan repeated. Just then Tim said in a matter-of-fact voice: ‘It must have been the werewolf.’ Lowan Tallow said nothing but leaned forward, knotting his arms even tighter. Clover didn’t know what to think; she’d never heard of werewolves. Mr Tallow said the cage had been left bolted up. So the werewolf had clever paws. Now she imagined the most cunning of creatures roaming the sandhills and making off with all sorts of animals—hares, rabbits, polecats... She thought of Lowan’s possum. Its eyes were lustrous. Its tongue was very pink. Did the werewolf eat its prey on the spot? Or was it capable of
