Sears Wolf Web Example

NOTE TO THE READER The following is a work of fiction set in the early 1950s. An element of the novel is an exploration of the uncommon inherited medical condition known as variegate porphyria, a metabolic disorder, one of several related diseases in the group porphyria. Known to be difficult to diagnose, porphyria can be triggered by a change of medication or chemical substances. There is a convincing explanation that King George III suffered from the disease, following tests carried out on a lock of his hair in the 1970s, and later through records of a common medication given to the king to control his ‘madness’. In this novel, two principal characters have variegate porphyria; the illness manifests as a skin disorder and is not unlike the Werewolf Syndrome which causes excessive hair growth; one character develops the acute form of the disease (triggered by toxicity from a chemical substance and the misuse of medicines) where psychosis is present. The author cannot accept responsibility for the herbal ‘remedies’ mentioned herein. This book is not intended for prescribing or treating ailments and diseases. The characters in this novel do not resemble any persons, living or dead.
