9 10 THE CRYPT CHAPEL APPOINTMENTS In the foundations of the Cathedral, amongst the footings (the very base of the beginnings of Roman Catholicism in the New World), lay the remains of the evangelists of the Roman Catholic Church – Bishop Michael Power, Bishop Walsh, Bishop Lynch, Sisters of Loreto, Elmsly, King… It is within this highly significant holy ground that a new Crypt Chapel is being constructed. Excavation and underpinning have expanded the ceiling height. The repositioned crypts reinforce the primary axis that terminates at Bishop Michael Power’s crypt which is directly below the Altar of the Cathedral. Crypt Altar The Crypt Chapel is undergoing restoration to preserve the historical sacred ground of the Cathedral. Laid to rest, directly under the Cathedral altar, is Bishop Michael Power. Alongside Bishop Power, many others who gave of their lives are interred within the Crypt area. When completed, all will have the ability to pay homage to those who offered their lives to build the Cathedral.
