Stewart 34 Yachting-The First 50 Years-Book

167 ...without passion, it’s just wind and water to Fiji with her in the early 1960’s and helped to finance his trips by smuggling outboard engines into New Zealand that he had purchased duty-free from Fiji. Apparently New Zealand Customs got wise to his activities and on his last trip he had to toss a number of new engines overboard to avoid prosecution. Some years later,Rosina once again ended up on the bottom after coming loose from her Auckland mooring, sustaining hull dam- age and sinking. She was purchased as a write-off from the owner’s insurance company in 1976 by Brian L.Paget. Paget repaired her and installed a new engine and wiring. He cruised her for twelve years and in 1988 sold to CharlieWallace of Picton. Wallace reckoned that if she’d survived two trips to the bottom she must be a very hearty yacht! Rosina was a British flagged vessel, so Wallace re-flagged her in New Zealand. He lived aboard her for twelve years, extensively cruising her single-handed in the Cook Strait waters. During his ownership Wallace further upgraded Rosina for cruising,install- ing a hard dodger and replacing her sliding salon windows with smaller sealed port lights. Wallace sold in 2006 to an unknown buyer from Nelson, who is planning some long distance cruising.
