Stewart 34 Yachting-The First 50 Years-Book

104 Fortunately we managed to throw a line ashore to a young man who was there with his wife and young family. After some complications we managed to ferry everybody safely on to the rocks using the Avon inflatable rubber dinghy with a bow painter and a stern line. Apart from cuts and bruises we were little the worse.” A footnote by Ian Woodhouse, Patullo’s stepson: “Three days prior to Logan’s cruise to Pokohino Bay there had been an easterly storm which created a sizeable onshore swell. Over the following three days this swell gradually reduced until there was little evidence of it. Normally Logan, being a prudent mariner, would anchor a long way out from the shore, but on this occasion he attempted to anchor close in to make it easier for his daughter Katy and his two granddaughters to get ashore. Unbeknown to Logan, he had anchored over a sand bar (shoal). He anchored facing into the bay as there was a light south westerly blowing at the time. There was no sign of any swell but just after getting the anchor down a wave came up from nowhere and broke over Puarangi’s stern. The rest is history.” Patullo continued to sail and maintain his interest in Stewarts till the very end, fronting up for his last Ponsonby Cruising Club Rum Race just before he passed away at age 90. Ian Woodhouse continues to regularly race on Stewarts. Undoubtedly there are many other interesting stories of Stewart 34’s offshore work of which we are unaware. It is safe to say that in addition to being a fine harbour racer and local waters cruiser, the boat has proven that she is fully capable of extensive blue water passage making.
