Stewart 34 Yachting-The First 50 Years-Book

134 Rod Harris, who previously owned Perception, purchased Phantasy in 2005 and continues to actively race and cruise her. In recent racing she placed 1st on handicap in the 2005/06 and 2nd on handicap in 2006/07 in the spinnaker division of the Stewart Championship Series. On Jan 1 of 2007 she won first on handicap the New Year’s Day Race on Doubtless Bay after finishing 3rd on line against numerous newer and more modern race boats. Phantasy has also participated and finished commendably in the Coastal Classic in 2005 through 2007. Phenomena Sail No. 1675   Builders: Bob Hart/Ray Beale   Launched: 1974 Construction: Cold moulded timber, glassed over, teak over ply decks Construction of Phenomena’s hull and cabin was started in 1971 by Bob Hart for sailmaker Adrian Greatorex. Greatorex had a disagreement with Hart over progress payments so Hart blocked access to Phenomena by placing another boat in front of her. Greatorex was not amused by this, so one Saturday he hired a crane to lift the boat out of the yard and onto a waiting trailer. Phenomena’s hull and decks were completed by Ray Beale and then moved to Greatorex’s front yard, where he finished her over the next two years with the help of Richard Wilson. Greatorex sold the boat soon after the launching in 1974 to Eric Rogers. Rogers was having Keith Atkinson build him a Twilight when he learned Greatorex was selling a Stewart. Atkinson did a deal on theTwilight and freed Rogers to make a cash offer to Greatorex, which was immediately accepted. Rogers sailed her in all the cruising races organised by the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, and also all the winter races each year with the Bay of Islands Yacht Club and the Panmure Yacht and Boating Club. Rogers recalled;“The Wednesday night races were something special to us and I doubt that we ever missed any of them either. In 1977 Phenomena was sold to Bruce Snedden who moored her at Westhaven. She was later owned by Fraser Chapman of Thames, the partnership of Barrie & Carlene Morgan and Paul & Sally Burge and then Alan Reid of Northland. Ken Ross of Kerikeri purchased her in April of 1999. Her present owner is Willy Cassels-Brown of Kohimaramara. Other owners: Ted Peacock and Len Light. Phlyer Sail No. 4943   Builder: Export Yachts/John Rea   Launched: 1982 Construction: Balsa core fibreglass Phlyer’s hull and decks were built by Export Yachts with John Rea doing the interior fit out at his yard on Archers Road in Glenfield. She was launched in time for the 1982 racing season for owners Wayne Boberg and Alan Sweetman and was used as the display boat at that year’s Auckland Boat Show. Boberg wrote “She is tender when matched with most of the fleet, especially Pahi, which is much stiffer. It really shows when tight reaching with the No. 1 spinnaker in a breeze.” Nonetheless Phlyer won the Stewart 34 Championships with a race to spare in 1984. It probably didn’t hurt that Boberg had Brad Butterworth, Dean Phipps, and Kevin Shoebridge in the crew. In addition to a commendable race record, Boberg has also cruised Phlyer all over Northland. He recalled one memorable passage: “Rakino to Smokehouse Bay (Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island, roughly 38 miles) in a 25 knot southwesterly Phlyer in clear air on a postcard day during the 2007 Stewart Championships Christine Webb
