Stewart 34 Yachting-The First 50 Years-Book

149 Poseidon has enjoyed a successful ocean racing career Debbie and Paul Griffin Collection Precedent on a flat run in the 2003 Championships Charles Scoones Poseidon Sail No. 833   Builder: Keith Atkinson   Launched: 13 December 1963 Construction: Cold moulded triple skin kauri, glassed over, steel keel Built for chiropractor Milton Miller,Poseidon was one of the more successful Patikis. Milton sailed Poseidon in the 1966 Sydney to Hobart race coming 9th over the line and 24th on overall handicap. His crew was Ron Green as navigator, Minky Goodman, Gill Littler, Warren Smith and a young up and coming sailor by the name of Ron Holland. After the race and with a few Aussie dollars left over, he is said to have invested in some shares in an Australian mining company bearing the same name as his yacht. It is rumoured that the shares jumped to a thousand times what Miller paid for them. To get a better rating for the Sydney-Hobart, he moved the mast back a distance of approximately 18 inches. In those days, the larger the mainsail, the higher the rating,so by moving the mast aft,he made the main smaller and achieved a more favourable rating. As a result of this modification, the StewartAssociation would not let him race for the championship upon his return fromAustralia until he had moved the mast back to its original position. When racing locally, with the mast aft,it didn’t seem to make any difference to the boat’s speed. Some of Poseidon’s other notable race results were: 1966: the Balokovic Cup - 3rd (Stewart class sail no.F133) 1969: Auckland/Suva race - surfing with speedo on 15 knots - the 6th boat overall and winner of the 1st division NZ Yachting & Boating, July 1969:“You won’t convince anyone on Poseidon that 13 is an unlucky number or that Friday the 13th is a bad day for sailors. She was launched on Friday. December 13, 1963, her sail number in the Stewart 34 class is 13, she had sailed approximately 13,000 miles before this race, and there were 13 boats in the first division and she won it.” 1970 Regatta:3rd Division race - 1st over the line,1 sec ahead of Mercedes,4th on handicap 1971Whangarei/Noumea Race with rating she was 4th overall and 19th inA Div. 1971/72: Miller went over with Jim Davern as crew for the Congressional Cup Match Racing Series. He stayed in the States. Poseidon was purchased in the 1977/78 season by the partnership of Peter Young and Eric Parr. Parr and Young won the 1982/83 Stewart 34 Handicap Prize. Boatbuilder Richard Wilson put Precedent up on the hard again, soon after her launching, to open up the keel for the addition of more lead.
