133 Phantasy nips at Prism’s heels in the 2007 Stewart Championships Keith Miller Collection Perception is a handful for owner Rod Harris in a big puff in the 2003 Stewart Championships Charles Scoones Perception II Sail No. 3327    Builder: Barry. Goldsbury   Launched: 1976 Construction: Cold moulded double diagonal kauri, glassed over Perception was built in Howick of double diagonal kauri by her first owner Barry Goldsbury, who sold shortly after launching to M. McDonald and P. Jantke. They sailed her offshore in the early 1980s, visiting Tonga, Fiji,Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Her next owner was a Dutchman by the name of G. Boake who kept her Onerahi in Northland. He raced her and won a winter series with the Onerahi Yacht Club. She was purchased in 1991 by NeilWyness of Hihi Beach,Northland and was moored at Mangonui whereWyness sailed with the Mangonui Cruising Club. She again won the winter series in 1991 Wyness sold to Rod Harris in November of 1995. Harris, a former merchant banker, is no stranger to competition, having been an international tennis professional who has competed at Wimbledon and in the US Open. Perception’s home port was in the North and she continued to sail with the Mangonui Cruising Club. Harris moored Perception at Hobsonville for 10 months of the year, and whilst there she raced with the Royal NZ Air Force Yacht Club at Hobsonville and the Ponsonby Cruising Club in Westhaven. Since 1996 she has been campaigned quite extensively doing the Coastal Classic in eight consecutive years from 1996-2004. In 1996 she recorded the third official fastest time for a Stewart 34 from Auckland to Russell, completing the 120-mile course in 16 hours and 11 minutes. In a fresh nor’easter, the GPS was regularly showing 16 knots over the bottom. Perception sailed in the 1998 Auckland to Tauranga race. She entered the Canon Summer Series in from 1996 through 2004 with commendable results. In 1998 she won the annual New Year’s Day race on Doubtless Bay over a large fleet, having had a good battle with and beating Panui over the line. Harris sold Perception in 2005 and purchased Phantasy soon after. Her new owner, Mike Price has been carrying out an extensive refit of Perception for cruising. Phantasy V Sail No. 5451   Builder: Export Yachts   Launched: February 1984 Construction: Balsa core fibreglass Phantasy’s hull and decks were built in February of 1982 and delivered to owner Bryce Sommerville for completion. Phantasy was launched in February of 1984 and was in the fleet for the 1985 Citizen Watch Match Racing Series. The hull was light by 110 lbs, while the deck was light by 154lbs. and the Stewart Association did not have the opportunity to inspect them before the boat was completed. It wasn’t until October 1987 that she was fully equalised, when Sommerville had agreed to put 160 lbs under the gunwales and 40 lbs between rudder and stem,halfway between waterline and deck line. In the early 1990’s she was co-owned by Pauline & Bryce Sommerville and Rose & Phil Coveny. Sommerville sold his share to Bill Miller in August of 2002. Miller owned this share for a short time before returning to his beloved Pionnier in December of that year.
