I N A U G U R A L Victor Rebengiuc ACTOR, ROMANIA B orn 82 years ago to a modest family in Bucharest, Romania, Victor Rebengiuc is the leading actor of his country, equally sought after by the young directors of the Romanian New Wave. His memorable performances in Medal of Honor, which won Best Film at SEEfest in 2011, in short film Half Shaved shown at the festival last year, and in The Japanese Dog in this year’s festival are timeless highlights of a remarkable career. Rebengiuc brings to the screen the qualities seen only in the greatest of actors such as Michel Simon or Spencer Tracy. He credits Liviu Ciulei, who directed The Forest of the Hanged—winner of Best Director award in Cannes 1965—for his breakout role. The film, and the book by Liviu Rebreanu it was based on, dealt with ethnic conflicts in Austria-Hungary. The film was a watershed moment in the recent history of Romanian cinema, as the first Romanian film to gain critical recognition internationally. Victor Rebengiuc collaborated with veteran Romanian filmmaker Dan Piţa on several of his films and worked with the great theater director Silviu Purcărete on numerous occasions. He also collaborated with the celebrated Romanian stage and film director, Lucian Pintilie, most notably in Too Late, nominated for the Palme d’Or in Cannes (1996) and Last Stop Paradise (1998), winner of the Special Grand Jury prize in Venice. He received awards for his work at international film festivals in Torino, Thessaloniki, and Cluj, an honorary doctorate from the Theater Institute, and the Prometheus Opera Omnia Award for Performance Art from the Anonimul Foundation. SEEfest is celebrating the great Victor Rebengiuc with his latest film, The Japanese Dog, the debut feature by Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, and a Romanian Oscar entry. Mr. Rebengiuc is a delight to watch; an artist who graces the screen with his every performance. The SEEfest inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award is dedicated to Victor Rebengiuc’s entire body of work in Romanian cinema and theater. 6
