PROGRAM: FEATURE FILMS THE WOODS ARE STILL GREEN Lead actor Michael Kristof in person Austria/Slovenia, 2014, 107 minutes North American Premiere Director: Marko Naberšnik Producer: Robert Hofferer When a handful of Austrian-Hungarian soldiers in a solitary artillery post in the Julian Alps during World War I sustain casualties, two survivors are left to fend for themselves. Without any help from the command head office and with no food or water, survival becomes an existential challenge. This screening is made possible by generous support from the Consulate General of Austria and Turkish Airlines. THE JAPANESE DOG Romania, 2013, 85 minutes Director: Tudor Cristian Jurgiu Producers: Bogdan Craciun, Tudor Giurgiu An old widower—played by the Romanian acting legend Victor Rebengiuc in a bravura performance—is coping with the aftermath of the recent floods that devastated an entire village. A visit from his estranged son with a young Japanese family in tow stir deep-seated emotions on both sides. The encounter, filmed with great subtlety on a backdrop of spectacular visuals, transforms one solitary life in a powerfully wrapped conclusion. DOWN THE RIVER Azerbaijan, 2014, 90 minutes North American Premiere Director: Asif Rustamov Producer: Mushfug Hatamov Sumptuously photographed psychological drama powers through rowing races in a provincial town where coach Ali is caught in a web of his own midlife crisis and a desire to win a trophy at the expense of his trainee son, whom he forces off the team. A rare contemporary tale from a country making its debut at SEEfest. The screening is made possible by the generous support from the Azerbaijanfilm Film Studio named after Jafar Jabbarly. IT TAKES TWO TO FENCE Director Andrei Gheorghe in person Romania, 2014, 83 minutes North American Premiere Director: Andrei Gheorghe Producers: Dan Chisu, Andrei Gheorghe Alex, a former fencing champion recovering from a serious injury, is assigned to coach Anda. The two develop a relationship through outdoor training exercises revealing the beauties of the Black Sea port of Constanţa, and leading to intense rivalry between Alex and Anda’s boyfriend, a fellow fencing athlete. Luminous Romanian actress Olimpia Melinte electrifies the screen in the role of Anda. This premiere is generously supported by Stefania Magidson, Blue Heron Foundation, and Turkish Airlines.
