Alaska on the Go prevew

Public Transportation Anchorage’s sole public transportation service is through People Mover bus service (www.peoplemover.org). Serving the Anchorage Bowl and the nearby suburb of Eagle River, People Mover offers 16 different routes that crisscross the city with varying stages of efficiency. Many of the routes begin and/or end at the downtown Anchorage Transit Center on Sixth Avenue, a location frequented by many homeless adults and teens. Heated discussions have erupted in the past few years regarding the safety and security of Transit Center passengers, and our family has experienced some uncomfortable moments while waiting for a bus or accessing the parking garage housed in the same structure. That said, use your better judgment; People Mover buses themselves are fairly well policed and if your family is acquainted with public transportation and is willing to hoof it to and from random bus stops that may or may not be near your pre- ferred attraction or place of lodging, go for it. Fares range from $1/kids ages five to 18 to $1.75/adults. Kids ages four and under ride free. Day passes can be purchased through the People Mover website or by calling (907) 343-6543. Visitor Information Visit Anchorage, the city’s visitor bureau, is located at 524 West Fourth Avenue (www.anchorage.net, 907-276-4118) and is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June through September, with varying hours the rest of the year. Visit Anchorage provides information about Alaska’s largest city and the entire state with the help of both actual people and a comprehensive inter- active website. Start your Anchorage journey at the Log Cabin Visitor Center on Fourth Avenue and F Street, where most trips can be plotted and planned fairly easily. It’s a small building and busy during the summer months, so if the line is long, walk behind the cabin to the main office behind. Additional information for travelers can also be found at the CVB office at Ted Stevens International Airport near the baggage claim area. Lodging Many Anchorage hoteliers have yet to figure out the finer points of accom- modating traveling families and as a result do not possess the amenities of 59 Anchorage: You Can Get There from Here
