Alaska on the Go prevew

The Bureau of Land Management’s Campbell Creek Science Center, located on 760 forested acres in southeast Anchorage, also offers many opportunities to learn about wild Alaska creatures. Staff often lead discus- sions throughout the summer months to encourage active participation in personal safety, and a class is held each June to teach parents how to recreate in bear country with their children. Visit their website (www .blm.gov/ak/st/en/prog/sciencecenter.html) for class descriptions and locations. For a basic understanding of Alaska’s large animals, a visit to the Alaska Zoo (www.alaskazoo.com) is a good option for families with limited time. Weekly programs and special events at the zoo also provide learn- ing opportunities about facts of a particular Alaska animal and some strategies for safe recreation. Moose 37 Alaska’s Wildlife
