Alaska on the Go prevew

Top Layer/Outerwear • Rain gear (consisting of pants and jacket, Gore-Tex or other waterproof material) • Mittens/gloves (one pair of lighter-weight wool or wool blend) • Hat with brim to shield from sun, plus a warm hat (one each) Footwear • Sturdy sneakers or hiking boots • Sturdy sandals (we like Keen or Teva) • Rubber boots Not cheap (near the $40 mark for a pair) but extremely hardy, Carhartts are great for explorers of any age. Xtratufs or rubber boots. Also known as “Alaska sneakers,” Xtratufs are brown, knee-high rubber boots designed for cannery workers who stand around all day in fish guts or spend time in skiffs, hauling in soaking-wet nets. With their thick soles and leg-clinging fit, Xtratufs are the coolest foot- wear in every coastal community of Alaska. Costing around $85 for adult sizes and near $30 for kids, Xtratufs are completely waterproof and perfect for southeast Alaska adventures. Plus, they’ll be a hot topic of discussion when you return home, since all your friends will want some. Don’t want to pay that much? Rubber boots of any make or model will serve you well. Hat. Ball cap, stocking hat, cute little beanie—it’s all good in Alaska. Hats provide protection from the elements, including sun, and help keep pesky mosquitoes from noshing on your scalp. As is the case with most Alaska gear, the older the better and extra kudos to those who display their favorite outdoor recreation outfit across the brow. Dress for fun in all types of Alaska weather! 31 Packing for Alaska
