People seek structure and direction and thrive when kept active and productive. Providing a sense of belonging and encouraging the connection to the past traditions allows for the expression of emotions and ability to provide hope in overcoming hardships. Family Involvement is Important. Lasting, positive change in people’s behavior is more likely to occur when families are involved and engaged in the change process and share hope. We are responsible for each other. Ho-Chunk Kinship serves many purposes and has its place in programming. Community Involvement is Critical. Providing opportunities for success and effective intervention, when needed, requires an engaged, involved community. Those needing care require positive, long-term support in their lives from Ho-Chunk members who can serve as role models or mentors. Ho-Chunk Villages, Clans and Kinship are vital to survival of families, traditions and to a Ho-Chunk’s identity. Individuals must support their community and the community must support the individual, as both are dependent on the other and it is important for accountability and responsibility. Honoring the Sacredness of Cultural and Spiritual Values. Culture is sacred and individuals represent the future of the communities in which they live. The culture and spiritual values of the Nation must be respected and reflected in the care and treatment of those needing care. Wisdom and guidance of the elders is treasured. Make everyday a celebration and ceremony. Providing a Safe and Welcoming Place for People to Come. Communities, families, and past victims are entitled to feel safe. We need to reach out to support each other and offer a sanctuary to allow the individual to risk change. Honoring the Potential for Change. People have strengths and assets and are capable of positive change and growth. Honesty and integrity are the key to positive change. Hocak traditions and culture will support positive change. Providing Consistent, Nurturing Care and Discipline. Effective treatment strategies include consistent, nurturing care along with appropriate redirection when needed. Elders and mentors can provide that consistency and direction. Importance of Healthy Lifestyles. An active, healthy lifestyle is essential to positive individual development. A circle of care will promote wellness and provide balance. Life is sacred. The values identified by the LPT reflect the importance that the community places on nurturing those involved in the healing care system, while holding the Nation responsible for the members. There are clear values that speak of honoring individuals, culture, spiritual values and the community. All of these mutually relate to treatment or interventions for the members, to allow successful life in the communities
