Mandy Younger has been a Macmillan community nurse for almost five years. ‘As a young, newly qualified nurse going out into the community, I was very much in awe of the Macmillan nurses and palliative care nurses. I always aspired to be like them.’ Her day-to-day job involves visiting people affected by cancer in their own homes. Although there are common reactions like anger and sadness, Mandy says that every person is different. ‘It’s such a wide variation of people that you meet – no two stories will ever be the same. ‘The support we provide is really based around the individual’s needs. We try to be as flexible and accommodating as we can. And as people become less well, our input often becomes more frequent and more significant. ‘I think people often associate us with being very hands-on, but a lot of our job is listening and providing emotional support. If the mind’s in a better place, then hopefully the body will be too. ‘What makes Macmillan unique is that it’s there for the entire patient journey, so from the point of diagnosis right up to the individual’s needs at end of life – helping support families, friends and all those people that are important to that individual. Macmillan is delighted to benefit from Homebase’s cricket day and want to thank you so much for your support. Every penny you raise will go towards the Macmillan Nursing programme. ‘I think often people assume we’re only there for the very end. But that’s not true. We’re here from the very beginning. It’s such a valuable service, all the way through. Wherever you are in your journey , there’s a resource there for you.’
