Striking their way into the 2014 season, the Union Grove Lady Wolverines Fastpitch Softball team beat Appalache on Friday, Aug. 8 with a score of 9-1. “The team was nervous, but played well,” said Mr. Lee Kick- lighter, head coach. Over the course of the season, the team’s chemistry has been constantly improving according to Coach Kicklighter. “We started off kind of shaky, but now we’ve finally started play- ing as a team and depending on each other,” said Brittany Craw- ford, senior. Some of the key players who have set homerun records are Brittany Crawford and Madison Moore, seniors, and Skylar Mosel, sophomore. “Our team is full of talent. If we keep playing like we’ve been playing and hitting the ball like we can, we’ll go a long way,” said Mosel. Another key player is Haleigh Vernon, senior, who Coach Kick- lighter called “an overall really athletic and really great player.” “With the end of the season approaching, I feel we need to keep our heads on straight and not get too ahead of ourselves so that we can go all the way this year,” said Vernon. The team again played against Woodland on Sept. 16 and won with score of 4-3, bringing home another big win for the Lady Wol- verines. “The girls really worked well together at this game,” said Coach Kicklighter. Sept. 22 the Lady Wolverines went up against Alcovy and won with a score of 9-0 and but came short to Ola on the 24 with a score of 3-4. According to Coach Spon- sler, the team serves well and keeps consistent passing. “For this being my first season on Varsity, I feel very welcome and everyone has helped me so much,” said Kassidy Wollet, sophomore. Key players were Alex Brake, setter, and Cathryn Hickey, mid- dle. “Throughout the season, we have figured out our flaws and we are working to becoming a better team,” said Brake. On Sept. 15 the LadyWolver- ines beat the Hampton Hornets, winning all three of their games needed. “It’s been a great season so far with the girls and I’m sure it’ll continue,” said Hickey. Sept. 23 the girls beat Luella 2-1, Dutchtown 2-0, but came up short at Ola with a score of 1-2. The girls’ area tournament will be on Oct.8- 9, and 11.
