www.thelikemagazine.com page 25 | Issue 010 Here’s a happy little how do you do I found at my local CD shop. In the 99 cent section of the used CDs, this was chillin’ there. Disc only in one of those envelopes with the circular window to show off the disc art, in un-played condition. Must’ve been just another promo copy that someone never listened to and just hawked for booze or weed money. The disc says BIGWIG across the top, Merry Melodies along the bottom, made to look like the title screen from the Looney Tunes. So, I pop this into the listening station and I can’t believe what I’m hearing! It’s not like Green Day at all, which don’t get me wrong… I DO love. They’re kinda faster and more hard rocking like a lot of the bands on the “Go Ahead Punk Make My Day” and “Punk O Rama 2” comps. They’re kinda like Penny- wise and Nofx. But these dudes aren’t playing 100 miles a minute at all times or going out of their way to be offensive. There is some sweet, sweet vulgarity though! On the opening track “Old Lady,” a song about getting in a car wreck with an old lady (‘she’s about 80 years old!/that’s right.’), singer Tom Petta yells ‘FUCK! YOU! You shouldn’t be allowed to drive!’ a bunch of times, which makes up the end portion of the song. Something I’m sure he wishes he could’ve done at the scene of the accident. It’s funny! They have a sense of humor. Like the song “Carnivore,” about how vegans should be eaten! My buddy’s vegan girlfriend hates this band ‘cause she thinks they’re anti-vegan. I think a member or two are vegans, so, like, stop taking things so seriously chick! There’s a few songs about girls. “Girl in the Green Jacket,” about a crush that you’re so nervous around you can’t talk straight. Even with cheesy lines like ‘I woke up from that dream and I saw you sleeping next to me/Gawd, you look so fucking good!’ in “Bad Timing,” it’s kinda cute and not lame. Some social awareness with “Pro Life Taker.” A song about people who are anti-abortion, bombing clin- ics and shit. ‘Who made you GOD?!’ I was afraid that cranking this CD too loud might make my parents wanna snap it in half, but Bigwig cover the “Cheers” theme song. And my parents are alright with anyone who is a Cheers fan. “UnMerry Melodies” is melodic hardcore, skate punk, pop punk all in one. Bigwig sound similar to bands like on Fat Wreck Chords, like Strung Out and stuff, but there’s something about these guys. They’re not trying to impress. They’re hella sincere. The album isn’t super slick sounding, yet the band shows awesome musicianship. Or… something. Bigwig is an amazing band and I am the one who discovered them, in my town! Watch out MTV and radio: Bigwig is gonna conquer all! Bigwig “UnMerry Melodies” Fearless Records Released April 30, 1997
