www.thelikemagazine.com page 24 | Issue 010 I first heard Mike McColgan sing on the first Dropkick Murphys’ full length, “Do or Die.” The band’s second album gave me a sour puss… ‘cause, well, Mr. McColgan wasn’t the singer anymore. I found out later, he left the band to become a firefighter. I eventually eased back into liking the Murphys, with Al Barr on vocals. But, when I found out Mike McColgan started the Street Dogs, I was super stoked. Their album “Savin Hill” was amazing! He has such a commanding, sincere voice. He’s more of a story teller than a singer. I have been a Street Dogs fan for the past decade because I’m such a Mike McColgan fan. When I hear of something he associated with, oh you KNOW I’m check- ing that shit OUT! FM359 is a band McColgan has started with fellow original Dropkick Murphy, guitarist Rick Barton. It’s not really a ‘punk rock’ sounding project. I guess you can say it has more of a folk rock sound. But when Bob Seger said he likes that old time rock and roll... the kind of the music that soothes the soul…this is it! That band describes their sound as a blend of gospel, country and rock. Hey. Mike McColgan sings THE gospel! There’s definitely a country/Americana feel to this record, with a bit of a shimmy and a shake. “When The People Check Out” and “Some People” have a bit of a rockabilly feel. “Some People” has a kind of country, almost southern rock twangy guitar lead. Not to undermine his own greatness, Johnny Rioux of the Street Dogs is also in FM359. He trades off lead vocals with (I think) Rick Barton and Mike McColgan on “I Saw The Light,” which is acous- tic, twangy and has some violin. Throw in “I’ll Be On My Way” and “Sons of Liberty No. 1,” a couple songs with some tin whistle and accordion, this album is everything any Dropkick and Street Dog fan have come to love without the raucousness. To the uninitiated, take a listen! You’ll be all like: “Springsteen? Dylan? ……who??” FM359 “Truth, Love and Liberty” Pirate Press Records facebook.com/FM359 piratepressrecords.com
