COAST APRIL 2016 WEB

April 2016 • COAST • www.coast-magazine.com • 33 Maddog relaxes at Pichler’s Perch above the Eklutna Glacier and below Peril Peak. The Mountaineering Club of Alaska huts on the Eklutna Traverse are all simple A-Frames like this. They have stoves, pots, some fuel and that’s it. You need to bring fuel, pads, sleeping bag and food. You must be a member of the MCA to use the huts. Member- ship costs $20 per year www.mtnclubak.org/ The Raven Headwall is a 40-degree slope that drops down from Raven Pass and Raven Peak. This is the other crux of the Eklutna after the toe of the Eklutna Glacier. Skiing the Raven Headwall can be a soft easy ride, an icy nightmare, or crevasses and glacier ice. Be prepared for anything. Oliver Evans rips the north face of an unnamed peak above the Eagle Glacier. The Eklutna Traverse is mostly flat touring. Adrenaline-junky skiers should plan a few extra days to ski peaks and glaciers without their overnight pack. Mike Schmid (burger eater) and Bryan Herold replenish their beer and burger levels at the Silvertip Grill in Girdwood. If you finish at Eklutna Reservoir, there will be no burgers and beer. • All photos by Joe Stock •
