It was in grad school at Cornell, working on a  PhD in physics, that she realized she wanted a career in medicine. She attended  SUNY Brooklyn Medical School, completing an internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent’s hospital.  In 1978, she moved to Boston where she completed a fellowship in endocrinology and started practice in 1980.  In 2008, she shifted her practice from internal medicine/endocrinology to a practice restricted to endocrinology.  She started her website, www. diabeticsurvivalkit.com, to help enhance the lives of people with diabetes through education about diabetes as well as cooking videos that teach people how to cook diabetic-friendly meals suitable for the whole family. Still in the Boston area, she is married and has two daughters. In addition to providing clear, basic scientific information about diabetes that the layperson can understand, this book examines how the disease impacts the physical, social, and spiritual lives of those affected by it by telling storiesinspiredbyDr.Kramer’spatients. Sheemphasizes the challenges twelve people faced in their personal lives as well as describing in detail how implementing various specific strategies allowed many of them to lead successful and fulfilling lives.
