While 42-year-old In- dian Canadian Harjit Saj- jan from Vancouver was appointed defence minister, 38-year-old Navdeep Bains from Mississauga got the portfolio of innovation, sci- ence and economic devel- opment. Another Sikh, Amarjeet Sohi from Edmonton, who is not turbaned, has been sworn in as minister for in- frastructure. A former bus driver, Sohi was jailed in India for two years in the 1980s. A young Sikh woman, Bardish Chagger from Wa- terloo, who is a first-time MP, has been sworn in as minister for small business and tourism. Interestingly, Punjabi is now the third most com- monly spoken language in Parliament, after Canada’s two official languages of English and French. Another interesting sta- tistic: Punjabi speakers make up about 1.3 per cent of Canada’s population, as per StatsCan figures. But the 20 Punjabi speaking MPs represent almost 6 per cent of the House of Com- mons.
