volunteer spotlight eau gallie high school’s dock club we make a living by what we get. we make a life by what we give. assist with homework. the shelton’s agreed to sponsor the idea, and the eau gallie dock club was formed with about 15 student tutors who visited the dock on tuesday and wednesday afternoons. at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, dock director trevor howard was invited to speak at a student assembly dedicated to club opportunities. howard, a familiar face on eau gallie’s campus, shared the tremendous impact that students have on elementary aged children at the dock. the result of his speech combined with the ongoing support of the shelton’s and eau gallie’s students is a dock club that has grown to 95 members! students visit the dock three afternoons per week. howard says, “having students who are not only committed to their own academic achievement, but also the academic achievement of the dock kids, is beyond significant. i am inspired by their dedication and commitment.” while the students who participate in the dock club earn community service hours toward bright futures scholarships, most are already well over their 100-hour requirement. student body eau gallie high school’s culture is rooted in community service. in fact, principal jeremy salmon, states with conviction, “everything that we do, every decision we make at eau gallie, is based on culture and relationships. this is principal jeremy salmon, grace parker, annie ferris, amanda henderson, gionna delbuono, cheyenne charles, mrs. lorie shelton, mr. michael shelton where we have the greatest impact.” this statement is clearly illustrated through the actions of teachers, michael and jodie shelton, who in addition to their classroom responsibilities, are involved in the anchor club (which advocates against bullying), student government, the global education club, miracle dance marathon, and avid site team (a group that provides academic support for students who aspire to attend college). when student casey krahmer approached the shelton’s about starting a new club for the 2016-17 school year, they understandably had reservations about taking on an additional obligation! however, the shelton’s heard out krahmer’s proposal. she had previous experience volunteering at the dock through her church and proposed that eau gallie students provide our elementary program with tutors to “everything that we do, every decision we make at eau gallie, is based on culture and relationships. this is where we have the greatest impact.” – principal jeremy salmon president, cheyenne charles, has already logged over 800 hours. it is clear that the relationship is paying off for the dock and eau gallie high school. howard says, “this collaboration serves as an example of a community coming together to share knowledge and experience that makes us all better.” announcing new volunteer opportunities! growing programs mean new volunteer opportunities. here are just a few of the opportunities for volunteers at bndc: • nutrition volunteer – coordinate and plan the dock snack program with healthy and appetizing food that appeals to children and teens • grocery-runner – monthly commitment to pick up and deliver the dock snack order at sam’s club. requires automobile that can hold a large amount of groceries • librarian – the dock has a wonderful library in desperate need of book-lovers with a talent for organizing • handyman – with two youth centers and a small apartment complex, bndc is in need of a handyman the dock is always in need of tutors, and bndc welcomes office volunteers, cleanup day volunteers, grant-writers, and volunteers for special events. contact carol sanchez, volunteer liaison, at 321.253.4214, x201 for more information. she is in the office m-th, 8:30am-1pm. dock update the dock teen center is open for business! january 20 was a picture-perfect day when hundreds of booker t. washington neighborhood residents, contractors and donors opened the doors of the new teen center building for over 45 excited and deserving teens! if you couldn’t make it and would be interested in touring or learning how you can help, please email development@bndcserve.org new teen center ribbon cutting irene summerford scholarship congratulations to aaron dolphus, the first recipient of our irene aaron dolphus and bndc board member valerie holloway at the annual titan scholarship reception summerford memorial scholarship fund that is part of the efsc foundation. aaron recently earned his associates degree and plans to continue at efsc to earn a bachelor’s. save the date! mark your calendars our fall fundraiser – carnival at the creek. this year’s event will take place on october 21 from 4 to 8 pm at up the creek farms. join us for food, fun and fellowship!
